NHS Senior Scholarship Information and Guidelines:<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • You must be a senior member of the National Honor Society in \u201cgood standing\u201d to be eligible for these scholarships.<\/li>
  • All scholarships are $500.<\/li>
  • Members can only win 1 award (to ensure that as many members as possible are awarded)<\/li>
  • Scholarships are tentative based on available funds each year.<\/li>
  • Essays are to be returned to the NHS advisor by 3 pm on May 1.<\/strong><\/li>

    1. Melissa Tanner Brown Award - $500<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

    This award is in honor of Melissa Tanner Brown an HH-NHS member of outstanding character from the class of 1979 who died with her family in a plane crash in 1988. The recipient of this award will be a person of outstanding character and will be selected by a panel of counselors and administrators from our school.\u00a0

    **No special application is needed as all senior members of the NHS are automatically considered.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    2. Local NHS Community Service Scholarship - $500<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    This award is open to all NHS members that earn a minimum of 24hours of community service throughout the school year.\u00a0 Recipients will be selected at random from those senior members that meet this service level. More than 1 recipient will be selected, based on available NHS funds.

    3. NHS Pillar Awards \u2013 4 awards valued at $500 each<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

    These awards are open to all NHS seniors.\u00a0\u00a0Teachers will be asked to nominate students who they feel best demonstrate all four pillars of NHS: character, leadership, service, and scholarship.\u00a0\u00a0The four students who receive the most nominations will be awarded the scholarships. \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    4. Robert H. Strawser Award \u2013 $500<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    This award requires the submission of a short essay.<\/p>

    Essay Topic<\/strong>:
    “One of the guiding principles of the NHS is leadership. Discuss the ways in which you have demonstrated leadership in your community during your time as a member of the NHS.”\u00a0<\/p>


    Essay Submission Directions:<\/strong><\/p>

    • Your essay must be a typed, double spaced essay of 500-1000 words.<\/li><\/ul>
      • Your name and the title of the scholarship must be on a cover page.<\/li><\/ul>
        • Your name will NOT appear anywhere else on the essay except for the cover page.<\/li><\/ul>
          • This is a \u201cBlind\u201dselection process. A committee of teachers will read and select the winning essay, without knowledge of who wrote the essay.<\/li><\/ul>
            • The NHS Advisor will not be a member of the reading committee and thus will\u00a0 not judge the essay submissions.<\/li><\/ul>
              • No late essays will be accepted.<\/li><\/ul>
