12 Day of Peace: Day 1: Food Drive

By | December 6, 2018

Below is the text our teachers will be using during Morning Meeting with our students to introduce the Food Drive and 12 Days of Peace. In your newsletters this month will be more programs we’ll be doing this month to teach our scholars about generosity, including Angel Fish Families and Book on Every Bed.

Did you know that there are a lot of children in our area that don’t get enough food to eat? One in five children doesn’t get enough food. That means in our class right now, some of our friends might not have enough food at home for snacks or meals. We need money to buy things like food, clothes, toys, and school supplies. Some families don’t have enough money to buy food or other things.

How do you feel when you are hungry? Does it make it hard to learn? Does it make you sad or angry?

We can help people in our community who are hungry by being generous. We can give them food to eat! At school, we give out free food for breakfast and lunch. We have snacks, too. We even have a BackPack program so kids can bring food home on the weekend—over 15,000 packs were given out last year.

But what about when there is no school? We are going to collect food for the friends and people in our town who need it. We are going to have a FOOD DRIVE. Not everyone will be able to bring in food to share, and that’s okay. But if you can bring in something for our food drive, please do. The things we collect have to be in boxes or cans, so they don’t go bad while we find people who need them. We will collect peanut butter, canned tuna, canned chicken, macaroni and cheese, soup, canned fruit, canned veggies, pasta, egg noodles, canned tomato sauce, canned applesauce, and quick oats. We will collect the food and our school will take it to food pantries, where people who are hungry but can’t buy enough food can get free food to eat.
