12 Days of Peace: Day 10: Christmas

Below is the text our teachers will be using during Morning Meeting during our 12 Days of Peace. In your newsletters this month will be more programs we’ll be doing this month to teach our scholars about generosity, including Angel Fish Families and Book on Every Bed.

Christians will celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ on December 25, Christmas Day. Many non-Christians also celebrate this day as a time of peace, joy, family, and giving of presents. Some people will put up a Nativity, which shows the story of Jesus’s birth. Others will put up a Christmas or holiday tree, festive lights, and winter decorations. Christmas songs are a big part of the holiday, and most children are familiar with carols like Silent Night, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Jingle Bells, and the Twelve Days of Christmas.

If you add up all the gifts in the 12 Days of Christmas song, there are 364 Christmas gifts.

The tradition of the Christmas tree comes from Germany. People didn’t always use glass ornaments to decorate the tree. They used to use fruits—like apples and oranges! Lots of families make ornaments, too.
