Super Power Word: Compassion

By | February 4, 2019

Our Super Power Word of the month is Compassion. Compassion is more than just being kind and considerate; it’s about wanting to help others and encouraging others to be compassionate and empathetic, too.

How do we raise compassionate children? By modeling compassion!

Last week, we closed school on a day when temperatures fell to thirty degrees below zero. While most of the feedback was positive, there were several people who did not understand why school was closed if there was very little snow on the ground. Compassion and empathy comes into play: imagine yourself as a child how has to walk to school on a day when the temperature is so low, frostbite occurs in ten minutes. School is more than ten minutes away, but your parents don’t have a car to drive you there. It’s walk or don’t go. You want to go, but your family can’t afford to buy thermal gear or winter gear that would keep you safe during a long walk to school in such cold winds. Honestly, I don’t think many adults would have been able to safely walk for twenty-five minutes in -30 degree weather even properly dressed. So, we closed the school for the day. Temperatures rose the following day, and school reopened. As I write this, it’s February 4, and it’s going to be 55 degrees! Our weather has certainly been crazy this year.

Let’s teach our children compassion.
