Let’s Learn About: Africa

By | February 6, 2020

Africa is a continent on the other side of the world. It’s the second-largest continent by size and population. There are over a billion people living there! Madagascar, Egypt, Algeria, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria are just a few of the 54 countries in Africa.

Africans were the first people to establish a civilization, the first people to make an alphabet, the first people to learn and teach geometry, trigonometry, astronomy, medicine, reading, and writing… It’s really no surprise that African-Americans have paved the way for the United States’ medical, social, and cultural advancement. Whether it’s performing the first heart surgery or fighting for American freedom, African-Americans and their ancestors are often the innovators improving culture and country at every opportunity.

Children in Africa like to play games, run around, and have fun, just like you. Mancala is the oldest game in the world, created in Africa and still played all over the world. Kids in Kenya play a fun game called Nyama Nyama. The leader says the name of a food or an animal, and if it is a MEAT you can eat, you jump and say, “Nyama!” Be careful, though! If they say something that is not meat or is an animal that you can’t eat, and you jump or say Nyama, then you’re out! The last person left is the winner.
