Welcome to Diven Elementary School!
Your child will be with us from Pre-Kindergarten to the 2nd Grade. Our sister school, Hendy Elementary, teaches our scholars from the 3rd Grade to the 6th Grade.
Here at Diven, we believe in “head” and “heart” learning. Our children are at an age where they will be learning primarily through play and social interaction. Let’s see what it’s like at Diven Elementary.
Hall Street Entrance
If your child is being dropped off in the morning, you may park in the parking lot across the street from the Hall Street Entrance. Your child will be given a free breakfast to bring to the classroom to eat, if they’d like. We have teachers and staff stationed at the Hall Street doors to help welcome your child and help them to classrooms. Teachers or teacher’s aides will be in the classrooms to help get your little ones situated, showing them their desks and cubbies.
When your child goes through the doors at the Hall Street entrance, or if you ever have to go the main office, you’ll find Mrs. Harvard and Mrs. Bauer just inside. They are friendly and helpful and just plain awesome folks. They can answer any questions you may have about our school.
Outside the main office is the main lobby area. There are pillars with drop-boxes for every teacher in our school. From this lobby area, our children can proceed to PK and K classes on the first floor or head down the hall to take the stairs to the “big kid” classrooms for our 1st and 2nd graders.
Please remember that classes begin at 8:20am. Your child should be seated and ready to learn at that time. Please plan your drop-off time accordingly. If your child is eating breakfast, you’ll want to arrive closer to 8:00am, for example.
Due to the need for temperature checks during drop-off (COVID-19 precautions), all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Check out the Notice Board at this entrance for any upcoming events.
Grand Central Ave Entrance
If your child is arriving by bus, they’ll enter at the Grand Central Ave door. Staff and teachers are there to welcome them to our school and help them find their classroom. They’ll be given a breakfast to bring to class, if they’d like.
This entrance is also where our cafeteria is located. Children will be eating lunch in the cafeteria on a staggered schedule, and then they’ll head out to recess.
Every month, you’ll receive the new lunch menu. We’ll always have a hot lunch and salad option, fresh fruits and vegetables. Our cafeteria staff works hard to make sure our children have healthy, fresh options available every single day.
You can choose to pack your child’s lunch, but our lunches are free for all of our students.
Learning Through Play
Our children learn through play! We have two playgrounds, blacktop games, and lots of green space. In the spring, children are able to play with chalk on the blacktop, too. We also have intimate courtyards where our little ones can plant seeds, watch caterpillars grow into butterflies, blow bubbles, and do picnics.
All children participate in “specials” each day. These special classes are Gym, Art, Music, Computers, and Library.
Our gym teacher will teach your child how to be a good team member and a healthy, active kid. They’ll learn lots of new skills, games, and sports!
Our art teacher will help your children explore the joys of color and creative expression. We have all sorts of paints and crafting materials available for guided art projects. At the end of the year, your child will receive their Art Portfolio to take home–the collection of all their art work they’ve made in art class throughout the year.
Our music teacher will teach your children about the joys of music and harmony through games, dances, and some fun and creative musical instruments. This year, our music classes will be held in our beautiful auditorium so that we have enough room for our children to dance and sing as a group while observing social distancing requirements.
In computer class, your children will learn basic computer skills and safety. For many of our children, this will be their first time using a mouse and keyboard!
Finally, our librarian will teach your child about the joys of reading. Books are a gateway to many magical worlds. As our children are just learning how to read, we’ll learn to love books. Classrooms also have their own little libraries, too.
Our Classrooms
Even with social distancing and new kinds of sanitizing protocols in place, we make our school–but especially our classrooms–warm and welcoming. Our staff has worked hard to make sure that our children won’t feel isolated. Happy, healthy kids with full bellies are kids who are ready to learn! They’ll still have recess outside, have daily specials, and eat lunch in the cafeteria. When seated at their desks, they won’t have to wear masks. Because of our age group, frequent hand-washing isn’t anything new. 🙂
Your child’s teacher will be available through e-mail and app (either ClassDojo or Remind) and will keep you updated on what’s going on in your child’s class. You’ll be able to work together to set learning and behavioral goals, too.
We are waiting for you and your child, and we can’t wait to have another amazing year!
