PD Activity

Step One- Understanding the Framework with a focus on the Arc

Prior to going over the Framework Arc we will review what has NOT changed in SS, and then go over how we got here today.  Use the ppt to start this conversation.  (Share the document with the rainbow arc.)

Each participants will do an activity with the following:

  1. Standards –  Participants will each get a copy of the standards. They will have to draw a picture that describes that standard.  We will then go around the room multiple times so that they can review what the standard is and what the drew to remember it.  * Identify these have NOT changed and are NOT listed on the arc.
  2. Shifts- Participants will each go over the shifts on the field guide.  Each participant will then do the below activity on the SS Shifts. <see handout> * Identify that these are the changes in SS instruction K-12, however they are NOT listed on the Arc.
  3. Themes- These are also in the field guide. For this activity, each participants becomes an expert in a “theme” and puts it in their owns words of what it means to them.  * Be sure to identify that these themes have NOT changed since the framework has changed and they ARE listed on the arc.

Social Studies Shifts–  This activity could be done by self to gain a better understanding for the Social Studies Shifts

SS Themes – This is the activity to do with the SS themes

SS Themes from NCSS–  Each participant should receive these to gain a better understanding for the SS Themes.
