Drum Dream Girl

The next couple of weeks our music classes will explore percussion music written to celebrate a great percussionist, Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, who was the first woman drummer on the island of Cuba.

Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle is an award winning book about a little girl who dreamed of playing drums in a time when girls were not allowed.

Students will explore her story and layered percussion music to connect history with cultures around the Americas and the emergence of Jazz music in America.  Students will experience syncopated rhythms and begin to use different rhythmic patterns to create their own drum songs.
