Senior Scholarships

NHS Senior Scholarship Information and Guidelines:

  • You must be a senior member of the National Honor Society in “good standing”to be eligible for these scholarships.
  • All scholarships are $500.
  • Members can only win 1 award (to ensure that as many members as possible are awarded)
  • Award winners will be recognized at the Honors Assembly in June.

Scholarships Available:

1. Melissa Tanner Brown Award - $500

This award is in honor of Melissa Tanner Brown an HH-NHS member of outstanding character from the class of 1979 who died with her family in a plane crash in 1988. The recipient of this award will be a person of outstanding character and will be selected by a panel of counselors and administrators from our school. 

**No special application is needed as all senior members of the NHS are automatically considered.

2. Local NHS Community Service Scholarship - $500

This award is open to all NHS members that earn a minimum of 24hours of community service throughout the school year.  Recipients will be selected at random from those senior members that meet this service level. More than 1 recipient will be selected, based on available NHS funds.

**No special application is needed as all senior members of NHS are automatically considered.

3. NHS Pillar Awards – 4 awards valued at $500 each

These awards are open to all NHS seniors.  Teachers will be asked to nominate students who they feel best demonstrate all four pillars of NHS: character, leadership, service, and scholarship.  The four students who receive the most nominations will be awarded the scholarships.  

4. Robert H. Strawser Award – $500

This award requires the submission of a short essay.

Essay Topic:
“One of the guiding principles of the NHS is leadership. Discuss the ways in which you have demonstrated leadership in your community during your time as a member of the NHS.” 


Essay Submission Directions:

  • Your essay must be a typed, double spaced essay of 500-1000 words.
  • Your name and the title of the scholarship must be on a cover page.
  • Your name will NOT appear anywhere else on the essay except for the cover page.
  • This is a “Blind”selection process. A committee of teachers will read and select the winning essay, without knowledge of who wrote the essay.
  • The NHS Advisor will not be a member of the reading committee and thus will  not judge the essay submissions.
  • No late essays will be accepted.


Essays are to be returned to the NHS advisor by 3 pm on May 1.
