Service Requirements

Service activities are those that are done for or on behalf of others (not including family members) for which no compensation (monetary or other) has been given.

  • 12 hours of community service per school year are required.
  • Service forms must be completed in full and submitted by May 1.
  • Activities must be supervised by a (non-family member) ADULT – not another student.
  • Certain activities are not allowed.  Please check the list below or ask Mrs. Callahan if you are not sure.
  • Failure to complete and submit service hours by the due date will result in removal from the NHS.

Possible Organizations for Fulfilling Community Service Hours

  • An area hospital
  • The Food Bank of the Southern Tier
  • A local Soup Kitchen
  • American Cancer Society
  • March of Dimes
  • Children’s Miracle Network
  • Diabetes
  • ARC
  • The Salvation Army (Bell Ringing)
  • Arctic League
  • Local Animal Shelter (SPCA, Horseheads Animal Shelter etc.)
  • Good Samaritan Food Bank
  • Meals on Wheels
  • Red Cross
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • A local town community center
  • An area senior living facility
  • HH Make A Difference Day
  • A local library
  • The Transformation Center (Elmira, NY)
  •  Wreaths Across America

If you know of an organization not listed above that offers volunteer opportunities, please let us know.

Activities Not Allowed

  • An activity that is paid.
  • A non-paid activity that is a requirement for another club/organization.
  • Playing in the band for the parade (as this is a requirement of band).
  • Playing in the pit (as this makes you a member of GRP)
  • Painting sets or ushering IF YOU ARE A MEMBER OF GRP. (If you are not a GRP member, then it is allowable)
  • Selling concessions for football or basketball games when it is a requirement for your sports team. (If you are NOT doing it as a requirement for your sports team then it is allowable).
  • If you are not sure if an activity can be counted, please ASK Mrs. Callahan in advance of the activity.
